Exactmedia » The Importance of Backlinks

General | Comments (0) @ 12:13 am

If you’ve read anything about or studied Search Engine Optimization, you’ve come across the term “backlink” at least once. For those of you new to SEO, you may be wondering what a backlink is, and why they are important. Backlinks have become so important to the scope of Search Engine Optimization, that they have become some of the main building blocks to good SEO. In this article, we will explain to you what a backlink is, why they are important, and what you can do to help gain them while avoiding getting into trouble with the Search Engines.

What are “backlinks”? Backlinks are links that are directed towards your website. Also knows as Inbound links (IBL’s). The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website. Backlinks are important for SEO because some search engines, especially Google, will give more credit to websites that have a good number of quality backlinks, and consider those websites more relevant than others in their results pages for a search query.

When search engines calculate the relevance of a site to a keyword, they consider the number of QUALITY inbound links to that site. So we should not be satisfied with merely getting inbound links, it is the quality of the inbound link that matters.
A search engine considers the content of the sites to determine the QUALITY of a link. When inbound links to your site come from other sites, and those sites have content related to your site, these inbound links are considered more relevant to your site. If inbound links are found on sites with unrelated content, they are considered less relevant. The higher the relevance of inbound links, the greater their quality.

For example, if a webmaster has a website about how to rescue orphaned kittens, and received a backlink from another website about kittens, then that would be more relevant in a search engine’s assessment than say a link from a site about car racing. The more relevant the site is that is linking back to your website, the better the quality of the backlink.

Search engines want websites to have a level playing field, and look for natural links built slowly over time. While it is fairly easy to manipulate links on a web page to try to achieve a higher ranking, it is a lot harder to influence a search engine with external backlinks from other websites. This is also a reason why backlinks factor in so highly into a search engine’s algorithm. Lately, however, a search engine’s criteria for quality inbound links has gotten even tougher, thanks to unscrupulous webmasters trying to achieve these inbound links by deceptive or sneaky techniques, such as with hidden links, or automatically generated pages whose sole purpose is to provide inbound links to websites. These pages are called link farms, and they are not only disregarded by search engines, but linking to a link farm could get your site banned entirely.

Another reason to achieve quality backlinks is to entice visitors to come to your website. You can’t build a website, and then expect that people will find your website without pointing the way. You will probably have to get the word out there about your site. One way webmasters got the word out used to be through reciprocal linking. Let’s talk about reciprocal linking for a moment.

There is much discussion in these last few months about reciprocal linking. In the last Google update, reciprocal links were one of the targets of the search engine’s latest filter. Many webmasters had agreed upon reciprocal link exchanges, in order to boost their site’s rankings with the sheer number of inbound links. In a link exchange, one webmaster places a link on his website that points to another webmasters website, and vice versa. Many of these links were simply not relevant, and were just discounted. So while the irrelevant inbound link was ignored, the outbound links still got counted, diluting the relevancy score of many websites. This caused a great many websites to drop off the Google map.

We must be careful with our reciprocal links. There is a Google patent in the works that will deal with not only the popularity of the sites being linked to, but also how trustworthy a site is that you link to from your own website. This will mean that you could get into trouble with the search engine just for linking to a bad apple. We could begin preparing for this future change in the search engine algorithm by being choosier with which we exchange links right now. By choosing only relevant sites to link with, and sites that don’t have tons of outbound links on a page, or sites that don’t practice black-hat SEO techniques, we will have a better chance that our reciprocal links won’t be discounted.

Many webmasters have more than one website. Sometimes these websites are related, sometimes they are not. You have to also be careful about interlinking multiple websites on the same IP. If you own seven related websites, then a link to each of those websites on a page could hurt you, as it may look like to a search engine that you are trying to do something fishy. Many webmasters have tried to manipulate backlinks in this way; and too many links to sites with the same IP address is referred to as backlink bombing.

One thing is certain: interlinking sites doesn’t help you from a search engine standpoint. The only reason you may want to interlink your sites in the first place might be to provide your visitors with extra resources to visit. In this case, it would probably be okay to provide visitors with a link to another of your websites, but try to keep many instances of linking to the same IP address to a bare minimum. One or two links on a page here and there probably won’t hurt you.

There are a few things to consider when beginning your backlink building campaign. It is helpful to keep track of your backlinks, to know which sites are linking back to you, and how the anchor text of the backlink incorporates keywords relating to your site. A tool to help you keep track of your backlinks is the Domain Stats Tool. This tool displays the backlinks of a domain in Google, Yahoo, and MSN. It will also tell you a few other details about your website, like your listings in the Open Directory, or DMOZ, from which Google regards backlinks highly important; Alexa traffic rank, and how many pages from your site that have been indexed, to name just a few.

Another tool to help you with your link building campaign is the Backlink Builder Tool. It is not enough just to have a large number of inbound links pointing to your site. Rather, you need to have a large number of QUALITY inbound links. This tool searches for websites that have a related theme to your website which are likely to add your link to their website. You specify a particular keyword or keyword phrase, and then the tool seeks out related sites for you. This helps to simplify your backlink building efforts by helping you create quality, relevant backlinks to your site, and making the job easier in the process.

There is another way to gain quality backlinks to your site, in addition to related site themes: anchor text. When a link incorporates a keyword into the text of the hyperlink, we call this quality anchor text. A link’s anchor text may be one of the under-estimated resources a webmaster has. Instead of using words like “click here” which probably won’t relate in any way to your website, using the words “Please visit our tips page for how to nurse an orphaned kitten” is a far better way to utilize a hyperlink. A good tool for helping you find your backlinks and what text is being used to link to your site is the Backlink Anchor Text Analysis Tool. If you find that your site is being linked to from another website, but the anchor text is not being utilized properly, you should request that the website change the anchor text to something incorporating relevant keywords. This will also help boost your quality backlinks score.

Building quality backlinks is extremely important to Search Engine Optimization, and because of their importance, it should be very high on your priority list in your SEO efforts. We hope you have a better understanding of why you need good quality inbound links to your site, and have a handle on a few helpful tools to gain those links.

Why Do People Giveaway Free Thesis Themes | Wp Blog Themes

General | Comments (0) @ 5:15 pm

One of the most popular Premium Themes to be freely given away by unscrupulous people is the Thesis Theme. Other premium Themes from different developers with good reputation suffers the same fate. Of course this problem is not limited to Premium WordPress Themes only but all kinds of popular software. Windows is so widely pirated that even giants like Microsoft have no proven way of stopping them.

In the case of pirated software, one can at least say the reason is because there is money to be made. When it comes to WordPress Themes, the reason will seem a little bit obscure to those who do not know. Why do people take all the trouble to give away Themes that cost 87 bucks? Do they make something out of it?

The one and only reason I can think of is LINKS.

Every one knows how important it is to have other blogs linking back to our own. A few good backlinks can propel your blog from the throes of SERPs to the front page in a matter of days. Businesses, big or small, who depends on their sites to increase their business pays SEO consultants big money to get their sites ranked for the top spot in the first page of Search Results. A top spot ranking can make a vast difference in the search hits if compared to the second spot and those underneath.

How do SEO consultants, after receiving their big bucks, guarantee a top spot ranking?

They go get backlinks for their client’s keywords and they want lots and lots of them to make sure their client climbs to the top and stay there so their contracts gets extended over and over again.

And where do they get the easiest kind of backlinks?

They buy them. Years ago, link brokers like Text Link Ads, Linksworth and the now almost defunct Pay Per Post did so well selling links as a middle man. Bloggers from all over the world registered with them and there are no shortage of takers who needs backlinks.

Suffice to say, the higher your page rank, the more you will be paid. It was a total free for all back then and even yours truly made some handsome money as I had a couple for PR5 blogs. On a good day, if we are fast enough, we can grab 2 opportunities to write a 200 words post worth at least 60 bucks a piece and all they need is 2 or 3 backlinks inserted. The beauty of it, you can write shitty craps. All they wanted was the links.

Some fishes to kill the monotony of a long winded post

On top of that, a PR5 blog can sell text links like hot cakes. At one time, I had more than 15 text links inserted in various locations of my PR5 blog from a month to month basis. I really thought I could go pro during that ‘golden’ era.

Things only grind-ed to almost a standstill after Google decided enough is enough. All those link buying is playing havoc with their Search Results. Even the crappiest sites are now ranking highly in their search results page, giving them a very bad reputation as the Best Search Engine in the world. They decided to bitch slap every one who was selling links and doing all those crappy paid posts. Almost all who were involved got their PRs stripped clean and their post disappeared from the SERPs.

It was a very effective move. With no Page Ranks to show, no one is interested to buy links from you anymore. You will laugh if I tell you now, but back then, even highly prominent bloggers that you and me know were involved.

They had to delete all those paid post, get rid of all those paid links and refund the money for Ads that has not reached their maturity date. Then they have to go submit a re-inclusion appeal to Google, beg for forgiveness and promise they will never be naughty again before Google decides whether to give them back their Page Ranks and have their blogs appearing in the Search Results again.

Google traffic is not important? Ha Ha.

It was such a fun period blogging during those times. There were so much crying and whining from bloggers who lost their Page Ranks and of course inevitably, Big G became the evil monster. Everyone was cursing the evil G. Even I even wrote a few sarcastic pieces myself.

Back to the story of why people are giving away the Thesis Theme and other Premium Themes.

Somehow, Google don’t seem to mind so much if you don’t overdo it with links in your Theme’s footer. Thus, many went that way in buying their backlinks. They started to sponsor Themes and have theme developers design nice looking themes, then pay them to have their links inserted in the Theme’s footer.

It was something that Wordpress developers and purist disagrees to because WoprdPress is open source and money should not be made from it. Theme developers are encouraged to play a part in supporting the WordPress community freely. Thus, official WordPress download sites never carries Themes with sponsored links.

Nevertheless, sites offering free premium Themes are a dime a dozen. All those themes carries at least 3 sponsored links, but people are getting smart. They know how to delete those foooter links. To overcome this problem, designers who sells links in their themes began encrypting the links, making it impossible for amatuers to distinct whih are links and which are codes when deleted, will break the Theme. Then there are also many who never know or heard of such a thing. They take those links as credits for the Theme developers so they leave it intact.

When it comes to the Thesis and other paid themes, because of it’s superior quality, it is a hotly searched and favored Theme. Good money can be made from Themes that are heavily downloaded because whoever bought the links in these Themes will get more backlinks and as such, links inserted into these Themes will naturally cost more.

The Thesis Theme became a link inserting haven for these link seller. As the Thesis is built with many of the core files standing individually, it becomes easy for them to hide their links in various places. It will take someone with some knowledge to dig into the core of the Thesis Theme to locate those malicious links. Unless you are able to turn the Thesis Theme upside down, there is a high possibility that there are still one or two well hidden ones.

For the same reasons that I am willing pay money to buy themes like the Thesis, I have no problems with theme designers who sells a link or two in their Themes to compensate their time and effort. In all fairness, they only gets paid once even of the Theme is downloaded a thousand times.

The problem I have are with the people who rip other’s themes for free, then sneaks some links in them for a profit.

Some even has the cheek to say they are doing it as a service to the WordPress community because they believe all WordPress Themes should come free. Yea, like as though the two encrypted links to some porn sites are inserted there for free too.

Wise up guys, there is no such thing as a free lunch in this world.

Google defends search result rankings

Singhal acknowledged that other search engines take a different approach, butargued that these too are imperfect.

“Other search engines approach this differently, selecting some results oneat a time, manually curating what you see on the page,” he said.

“We believe that an approach which relies heavily on an individual’s tastesand preferences just doesn’t produce the quality and relevant ranking that ouralgorithms do.

“And given the hundreds of millions of queries we have to handle every day,it wouldn’t be feasible to handle each by hand anyway.”

Google tinkers with the algorithms every day, according to Singhal, and usesmany different ’signals’ to create its search results.

“There’s a ton that goes into building a state-of-the-art ranking system likeours. Our algorithms use hundreds of different signals to pick the top resultsfor any given query,” he said.

“Signals are indicators of relevance, and they include items as simple as thewords on a web page or more complex calculations such as the authoritativenessof other sites linking to any given page.

“Those signals and our algorithms are in constant flux, and are constantlybeing improved. On average, we make one or two changes to them every day.”

Singhal reiterated that search is not perfect, but said that Google continuesto work at the technology.

“Ultimately, search is nowhere near a solved problem. Although I’ve been atthis for almost two decades now, I’d still guess that search isn’t quite out ofits infancy yet,” he explained.

“The science is probably just about at the point where we’re crawling. Soonwe’ll walk. I hope that, in my lifetime, I’ll see search enter its adolescence.”

How To Use The Robots.txt File To Increase Your Web Ranking

General | Comments (0) @ 3:59 pm

Typically we tend to rank well on one engine for a particular keyphrase and assume that each one search engines will like our pages, and hence we tend to will rank well for that keyphrase on a range of engines. Sadly this can be rarely the case. All the majorsearch engines differ somewhat, thus what’s get you ranked high on one engine might truly facilitate to lower your ranking on another engine.

It’s because of this that some folks like to optimize pages for each explicit search engine. Sometimes these pages would solely be slightly completely different but this slight difference might build all the difference when it involves ranking high.

However because search engine spiders crawl through sites indexing each page it will notice, it might return across your search engine specific optimizes pages and as a result of they’re very similar, the spider may suppose you’re spamming it and can do one among two things, ban your website altogether or severely punish you in the shape of lower rankings.

The solution is this case is to stop specific Search Engine spiders from indexing some of your internet pages. This is done employing a robots.txt file which resides on your webspace.

A Robots.txt file is a very important half of any webmasters battle against getting banned or punished by the search engines if she or he styles completely different pages for various search engine’s.

The robots.txt file is just a easy text file as the file extension suggests. It’s created using a straightforward text editor like notepad or WordPad, difficult word processors like Microsoft Word will only corrupt the file.

You can insert certain code during this text file to make it work. This is how it will be done.

User-Agent: (Spider Name)
Disallow: (File Name)

The User-Agent is the name of the search engines spider and Disallow is that the name of the file that you do not wish that spider to index.

You have got to start out a brand new batch of code for every engine, but if you wish to list multiply disallow files you’ll one below another. For instance

User-Agent: Slurp (Inktomi’s spider)

Disallow: xyz-gg.html
Disallow: xyz-al.html
Disallow: xxyyzz-gg.html
Disallow: xxyyzz-al.html

The on top of code disallows Inktomi to spider 2 pages optimized for Google (gg) and two pages optimized for AltaVista (al). If Inktomi were allowed to spider these pages likewise as the pages specifically made for Inktomi, you may run the chance of being banned or penalized. Hence, it is often a smart plan to use arobots.txt file.

The robots.txt file resides on your webspace, but where on your webspace? The foundation directory! If you upload your file to sub-directories it will not work. If you needed to disallow all engines from indexing a file, you just use the “*” character where the engines name would sometimes be. However beware that the “*” character will not work on the Disallow line.

Here are the names of a few of the large engines:

Excite – ArchitextSpider
AltaVista – Scooter
Lycos – Lycos_Spider_(T-Rex)
Google – Googlebot
Alltheweb – FAST-WebCrawler

Be certain to check over the file before uploading it, as you’ll have made a simple mistake, that might mean your pages are indexed by engines you don’t need to index them, or maybe worse none of your pages may be indexed.

Article Marketing Strategy: Building Backlinks to Your Web Site …

General | Comments (0) admin @ 2:31 pm

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

One of the most important elements of a total article marketing strategy is building backlinks. A backlink is a link from another site that is pointing back to your web site. This link pointing back to your web site is like a “vote” for your site. It gives your site credibility in the search engines and improves your search engine rankings.

To create an effective linking strategy, you have to do more than just write articles. You also need to create resource boxes that are effective in helping you build backlinks. There are also other elements I’ll mention in this article that will help you build a complete linking strategy.

Your first step in building an effective linking strategy is to create an effective resource box. The way to do this is to create the right anchor text in your HTML resource box. (This is the resource box you will use when submitting your articles through an article submission service.)

The anchor text is the text that your readers will click on to visit your web site. What you want to do here is to choose keywords that searchers search for when searching in the search engines. Choose keywords that searchers are searching for to create your anchor text as this is what will help your web site get found in the search engines.

The way to do this is to use a keyword research tool to help you find this information. There are several free tools available you may use, but the best way to find a tool that works best for you is to do a search in your favorite search engine. Search for the keyword term “free keyword suggestion tool” (without the quotes).

Use different anchor texts for your articles. By varying your anchor text, you keep your link building strategy from looking like search engine spam.

Submit to as many article directories as possible here. The easiest way to do this is to use an article submission service so that you can post your articles quickly. The more article directories the service offers the better too because this will help you build your links quickly. A good article submission service will also help you build backlinks, gradually and naturally over time.

Another way to build backlinks is through syndication. Syndication is where you allow other sites to publish your article by including it on their web sites or through RSS (Really Simple Syndication – This is a search engine friendly form of content). Depending on how you have your RSS feed set up, only part of your article may display and your link won’t appear. Make sure you offer full RSS syndication of your article.

If possible, set up your RSS feed to syndicate the whole article. The best way to do this is to add your article to your blog, and then set up the RSS feed to offer the complete article in the feed. Your link will then display in the feed, and this will help you build backlinks from the sites that syndicate your articles.

Finally, use social media to help you build backlinks. This includes blog comments, social bookmarking, and micro blogging. This will allow you to get a lot of one way backlinks to your web sites from high traffic sites. The best part is that this will also allow you to share your content more easily with others.

The more ways, and the more places, you post your content, as long as it’s relevant, the more likely you are to connect with your audience. Although it can sometimes become time consuming, in the long run, you will increase your traffic and sales, and improve your rankings in the search engines.
