Search Beyond The Speed Of Thought

General | Comments (0) @ 12:26 am

Analysis – Google has begun rolling out the most significant upgrade to its search engine since its original launch. Instant Search goes beyond the number of indexed pages and page ranks, but introduces predictive artificial intelligence that will change the way we will search for information in the foreseeable time, it will change the way websites will position themselves in the daily pagerank game and it will change the way advertisers will efficiently take advantage of context-based advertising. Welcome to a world of a much more complex world of search. Here is why you should care.

We had known that Google’s real-time search was coming for a few weeks and it wasn’t quite the surprise anymore once it was online. You are now reading news and articles about the feature that has been introduced, whether it is the future or whether it is a flop. You can’t avoid the top-10-reasons-for articles and if you are a fan of those, then there is already plenty to choose from. But if you are sitting back in your chair and think about the impact of this new technology, you always end up at the conclusion that it isn’t just a new feature. It is an entirely different way Google thinks about search, the way it penetrates Internet-capable platforms and the way it anticipates to earn advertising dollars in the future.

Searching vs. Finding

Back in the late 1990s, when your website needed its own search engine to receive recognition, there was a German weekly magazine that did not pitch a “search engine”, but a “find engine” with the argument that what you aim to do with such a tool is to “find” and not necessarily “search”. Ultimately, they were right, even if the technology did not keep the marketing promises, much like Microsoft’s Bing promise that you will “discover” things you do not know.

Finding has been a marketing phrase as search engines have been largely passive tools until the auto-complete feature or suggested search terms became available in Google. With Instant Search, Google introduces predictive artificial intelligence that tries to predict what you may be looking for based on the letters you type. In some way, the search engine is now the active part and you have a much more passive role. In its concept, it is a natural evolution what has been available in Google for a long time and works along the lines of correcting spelling errors in your search phrase. You always received search options on top of the results page that offered alternative search terms and often indicated what you really meant to look for.

Google Instant Search Example

Instant search goes a step further and predicts most likely search phrases and directly relating search results based on a letter sequence. Call it real time search, live search or instant search: What we are seeing is an attempt to predict a search phrase you may be thinking of – or may not be thinking of yet. Conceivably, this may be a case where technology knows your thoughts before you know them, especially when you are digging for information surrounding a topic that isn’t exactly specific. In that view, Google has very likely taken a step toward a compelling semantic “find engine” that is powered by software that is ahead of the competition and backed by enormous hardware resources. We should remember that Google is already estimated to operate 2% of the world’s servers and we hear that this new instant search will increase the load on Google’s servers by a factor of 2x – 3x. Launching this feature requires a substantial investment in hardware and following Google requires more than pocket change.

Experience

I was somewhat surprised to see that Instant Search isn’t working on the latest Chrome browser on my PC, but works just fine on Firefox. According to Google, Instant Search will work, when it is completely rolled out, work on Chrome, Firefox, Safari and IE8.

Using Instant Search brings some changes that may be confusing, as some features you may be used to are gone.

Once you start typing, Google will immediately predict your search phrase. For example “dinosa” which would have ended in an intended “dinosaur” brings up “Dinosaur Train” from PBS Kids as the top search result. As you continue typing, the search results change, which gives the page a very hectic characteristic. You still receive suggested search terms, but you can no longer change the number of suggested terms, which are now locked in to 5. Also, suggested terms can no longer be disabled, there is no more search possible within search results and you cannot change the number of shown search results, which are now 10 per page (possibly to limit the immediate impact on Google’s servers.) Also, the search box on the bottom of each page is now gone.

I often found myself finding my exact search term being listed in the suggested search field, which shows the “I’m Feeling Lucky” entries and can be accessed within two key strokes. You simply type until the correct search term appears, and use the arrow down and arrow right keys and the page is loading. This accelerates search, but it effectively removes other possible and relevant search results from your view. By the way, the search results also change depending on what suggested search term you are choosing within a fraction of a second.

Google says that it believes that people will now search faster and can do at least twice as many searches within a certain time. Ultimately, Google hopes that faster search will attract more users and more search, which should result in more advertising revenue. In fact, searches are quicker, results may be found faster, but the quality of search results is still determined by Google’s pagerank system, which does not always deliver the result you are looking or right on top. In effect, you are gaining time by having Google type for you and seeing more suggested search results.

Websites and Advertising

Faster searches by themselves could give Google an edge with users over time, but it appears that websites and advertisers have to figure out how this change impacts them immediately. A Google pagerank below 5 has suddenly lost a lot of value and it is more than likely that SEO specialists will become more valuable and will be able to add more jobs to their portfolio. If you try the dynamic new search, you will also notice that the movement in the center of the page distracts from eth advertising that is displayed on the right side of the page.

Google now displays not just the regular number of ads for one search, but multiple sets of advertising groups while you search. Google may be confronted with a further devaluation of advertising: While the frequency of the ads may climb, the actual value of an individual ad will drop. The immediate effect could me a devaluation of advertising to some advertisers, whose ad is shown but largely disregarded because it is only shown for a few seconds. Google seems to be winning here in the near future and advertisers will have to adjust their ad placement and valuation, which will also have an effect on Google advertising on websites in its Adsense network.

The value for its advertisers and members of its Adsense network may not be there and Google may be playing with fire in this specific case.

Conclusion: Instant Search is here to stay

We have little doubt that there is a certain value and convenience to the user and Google surely has the buzz on its side to attract more users. On a closer look, Instant search makes a lot of sense to Google, as long as people will run two to three times the searches with two to three times the ad displays. However, Google may have to figure out how to keep the quality of its display and the valuation of its ad price. An ad placed within a dynamic search that is renewed every few seconds has no value to advertisers.

If Google’s plan that there will be twice as many searches as before, we should see a significant uptick in search market share next month. And that may prompt a quick reaction in Microsoft’s and Yahoo’s strategy.

Top Google Ranking – What is Algorithm | Top Google Ranking Tool

An intricate arithmetical formula used by search engines to evaluate the significance and importance of websites and rank them accordingly in their search results. These algorithms are kept secret as they are the key to the objectivity of search engines (i.e. the algorithm ensures related results, and related results bring more users, which in turn brings more returns).

Although we do not know Google’s algorithm formula, we can certainly make a guess, and the result of our website ranking gives us some clue to this. Main keywords, LSI keywords, text links to other relevant pages within the website, photos with keywords, backlinks, and relevant content play a key role in determining the position of your website in your top Google ranking placement strategies.

A complex mathematical formula used by search engines to assess the relevance and importance of websites and rank them accordingly in their search results. These algorithms are kept tightly under wraps as they are the key to the objectivity of search engines (i.e. the algorithm ensures relevant results, and relevant results bring more users, which in turn brings more advertising revenue).
