Werder Bremen’s preparations for the DFB Pokal final against Bayern Munich have received a boost as they will welcome Peter Niemeyer back into their squad for the match.

The 26-year-old defensive player has been a long-term injury problem for the Bundesliga club this season but he returns to a panel of 18 players, according to the club’s official website. He is the only fresh face in Thomas Schaaf’s selection in comparison to the team that drew 1-1 with Hamburg last weekend to secure a place in the Champions League next season.

Werder have enjoyed frequent success in the DFB Pokal over the last 20 years, winning the competition on five occasions and most recently claiming the crown last term, when Mesut Oezil scored the only goal of the final against Bayer Leverkusen. FCB, however, are gunning for a 15th crown in Berlin on Saturday.

Werder Bremen squad to face Bayern Munich: Wiese, Wiedwald, Naldo, Mertesacker, Pasanen, Fritz, Boenisch, Proedl, Frings, Oezil, Bargfrede, Marin, Hunt, Almeida, Pizarro, Jensen, Borowski, Niemeyer.
